⏱️ Too busy to read now? Key things to know:
► Fake invoices look routine and professional.
► Never pay directly from email links or attachments.
► When in doubt, ignore it. Real companies will follow up in other ways.
A reader recently told me about an email that almost fooled her. It looked like a normal invoice from a company she vaguely recognized. The amount was not huge - about $89. And it came with a friendly note saying payment was due in five days.
She almost paid it just to cross it off her list.
But something about it bothered her. She couldn't remember ever doing business with that company. When she searched the name online, she found warnings from others who had received the same invoice.
It was fake.
These invoice scams are growing because they do not rely on panic. They rely on routine. Scammers know many people will pay small amounts without much thought, especially if the email looks professional.
You might see these scams as:
🚩 PDF invoices attached to emails
🚩 Payment requests through links or QR codes
🚩 Messages claiming late fees if you don't act soon
🚩 "Outstanding balance" notices from unknown vendors
🚩 Subscription renewals for things you never signed up for
Once you pay, the money is gone. And worse, you have just confirmed that your email and credit card are good targets for future scams.
How to handle any online invoice safely:
✿ Never pay directly from an email link or attachment.
✿ Check your credit card or bank history for any past charges.
✿ Ask yourself, "Do I actually recognize this company?" before doing anything.
✿ When in doubt, ignore it. Real companies will follow up in other ways.
✿ Look up the company yourself and contact them using their official website.
⏱️ This week's 30-second action:
Search your inbox for "invoice" or "receipt." If you see anything you do not recognize, flag it now so you do not accidentally pay it later.
Most scams look dramatic. This one looks boring. That is why it works.
